StarBand, a service brand of Spacenet Inc., is two-way, always-on, high-speed satellite Internet service available for residential and small business customers. Through ABACO CONNECTION, StarBand service is now available in the Abaco region of The Bahamas. StarBand was founded in 2000, and in 2005 it was merged into the operations of Spacenet Inc.

Abaco Connection is a division of Bahamas Satellite Connection. It sells, installs, and services StarBand system in The Bahamas.

General StarBand information:

The StarBand system consists of a 24" x 36" satellite dish mounted on or near your home or office. The dish must have a clear unobstructed view of one our satellites (258 magnetic with inclination of 25 degrees) located 22,300 miles up over the Equator in the southern sky. Two standard coaxial cables connect the satellite dish antenna to the StarBand satellite modem connected to your computer via an Ethernet connection. StarBand sends requests to the Internet and receives Internet content via satellite. The satellite communicates with the StarBand hub facility, which has a direct connection to the Internet. No telephone connection, dial-up account or other Internet service providers are needed. StarBand does it all for you.

StarBand provides a standalone communications tool that only needs 110-volt power that can be generator supplied. This capability is ideal either as a primary or backup source of internet connectivity. Multiple computers can be networked to a StarBand system.

StarBand provides download service at up to 1.5Mbps and upload service at up to 256Kbps. The initial cost is $499 + freight, duty, stamp tax, and installation. The owner is expected to provide a pole firmly anchored in the ground that meets installation specifications. The monthly fee is $149.99/month for a minimum term of 12 months.
